Taurine and longevity: what the human evidence actually shows
Taurine became a longevity headline after a study showed it slowed aging in mice — that part is real, but it hasn't been shown in people. What human trials actually show is smaller: less arterial stiffness after hard exercise, and (combined with another amino acid) less muscle soreness. It's cheap and appears safe short-term, but there's no proof yet that it extends human life.
The finding that made taurine famous — a deficit that drives aging, a supplement that reverses it — was shown in mice and monkeys, not humans. A 2023 Science paper found taurine levels decline with age across species and that restoring them extended both healthspan and lifespan in mice, and healthspan (not lifespan, which wasn't tracked long enough) in monkeys. In humans, taurine only correlated with age-related disease; no trial has tested whether supplementation extends human lifespan. The human evidence that does exist is real but narrow: small, short randomized trials in young men showing less exercise-induced arterial stiffness and (combined with BCAAs) less muscle soreness.

Dose, form, and cost
- Studied dose: 6g/day, split into multiple doses. Most commercial capsules provide 500–1,000mg.
- Form: taurine powder is far cheaper at gram-level doses and is highly soluble in water.
- Timing: no data favors a specific time of day — the trials dosed throughout the day.
- Cost: one of the least expensive compounds in the longevity category, which changes the risk/reward calculation compared with premium supplements that also lack human lifespan data.

Frequently asked questions
Does taurine extend human lifespan?
Not demonstrated. The finding that drew attention showed taurine declines with age and that restoring it extended lifespan and healthspan in mice, and healthspan in monkeys (lifespan wasn't tracked in the primate arm). No human trial has measured lifespan, healthspan, or age-related disease from taurine supplementation — presenting the mouse result as a human finding is an extrapolation the study's own authors didn't make.
What dose of taurine should I take?
The positive human trials used 6g/day in split doses over 14 days to two weeks. Commercial doses of 500–2,000mg/day are below what was studied, though the safety margin appears wide and the price gap for a higher dose is small given how cheap taurine is.
Is taurine safe to take daily?
It was well tolerated at up to 6g/day in short trials, and it's a molecule the body already produces. Long-term daily supplementation over years hasn't been studied — that's an assumption, not a demonstrated result.
Do energy drinks provide enough taurine?
A typical can contains 1–2g, which is within supplement-range doses — but alongside caffeine and sugar. If the goal is taurine specifically, the isolated compound is cheaper and cleaner.
